Givin the Dog a Bone by AC/DC: A Discussion of the Lyrics

This lyric analysis comes as a request from a person named Brad from the site’s Facebook page listing my earlier post concerning AC/DC’s Let Me Put My Love into You lyrics. As always, requests are welcome, so if YOU have one, be sure to leave a comment on this site or on the Facebook page.

Givin the Dog a Bone: What are they singing about?

“Givin the Dog a Bone” comes from the album Back in Black, which is the first of the AC/DC albums to feature Brian Johnson on vocals, who replaced Bon Scott following his death.

While this song’s lyrics seem to repeat quite a bit, what they DO say is extremely insightful. I particularly want to focus on the second verse and the chorus because they seem to have a significant cause and effect relationship:

Oh, She’s using her head again
She’s using her head
Oh, She’s using her head again

I’m just a givin’ the dog a bone
Givin’ the dog a bone
Givin’ the dog a bone
Givin’ the dog a bone
I’m just a givin’ the dog a bone
Givin’ the dog a bone
I’m just a givin’ the dog a bone
Givin’ the dog a bone

The verse about the woman using her head again clearly means that she is a very intelligent woman especially since there is a well-documented history of her repeatedly using her head. The next verse (which is actually the song’s chorus) describes how Brian Johnson is providing a bone for their dog to chew on. Perhaps the dog was being terrorized by a neighborhood cat and the quick thinking of the intelligent woman eased the dog’s nerves when she suggested that Mr. Johnson obtain a bone for the dog. This is a true example of how teamwork can solve pretty much ANY problem that may arise.

This is Bailey. You can see from the destruction done to the bone that Bailey was stressed out beforehand but the bone clearly had a soothing effect. Photo courtesy of Edward Knoblock Jr.

You can tell from the two pictures above that when a dog chews on a bone, it definitely has a calming effect. The unnamed woman in this song saved the day for both the dog and the people who care for it. She truly is a hero. It leads a person to wonder if maybe she is a veterinarian or somehow she has specialized knowledge on the care of animals, or maybe she just knows from experience what dogs like. Maybe she is just an overall intelligent person who can figure out problems when they arise. It truly is a shame that AC/DC didn’t probe deeper and give us the answer to these questions.

Givin the Dog a Bone: Possible Alternative Meaning

There is a slight possibility that Givin the Dog a Bone is about something sexual in nature.

  1. This song is clearly about fellatio, she’s using her head again as in sucking on one rockhard throbbing Bone or other words a penis.

  2. Huh. You’re saying it’s about a woman using her head to think??? I don’t know my son (he’s 12) told me it’s about a chick sucking penis??? I’m very shocked that it’s about something else. Thank you for this article

    1. I would have to disagree with your son’s analysis. There is no mention at all of a penis in this song.
